Thanks for your input, Spike.

I'm pretty sure you can only recommend something once, so Spike can't inflate her # of "Recommended"s. I think it's fine for an author to recommend her own work.

Here's a tip for AustinTownHall: Spam with a fake name, you look like a douchebag.

La Dolce Vita Photography might want to think about changing their name before they get their pants sued off by Dolce Vita Cafe.

This is Austinist, not Albuquerquist. Not all "APD" stories refer to our local jack-booted thugs.

Dear Subway Employee,

Please stop calling yourself a "sandwich artist".

on 05/30/2008

Dear Austin,

Please stop calling sandwiches "sammies". It's neither funny nor cute. It was thought up by Quiznos which means it's lame. Just stop.

Sincerely,
Your local sandwich artist

Don't discount the possibility that the supposed "Spike-hater" is actually Spike herself trying to generate some controversy and more hits for her articles.

on 05/24/2008

Fascinating... I've figured out how to make Spike type the word "bananas."

on 05/23/2008

That's one for bananas.

on 05/23/2008

Nearly everything about Spike rubs me the wrong way.

I take that back... I shouldn't say nearly. I don't think of her behavior as unethical so much as I think of it as egomaniacal.

What bugs me most is that her articles are always hugging the most recommended slots when it seems highly likely that the only way her articles get to that level is because she's bumping them to that spot all on her own.

I don't see the other writers pimping their stuff with such bomcastic alacrity. Does it mean her writing is better? No. It means she's a freak who thinks this really is some sort of popularity contest.

on 05/23/2008

If Spike takes the time to write and post an article, it's self-evident that she thinks it's worth somebody's time to read it, thus she recommends it.

Somebody appears to be really offended by her using the recommendation function attached to these articles and at the Austinist for allowing authors to recommend their articles.

I guess this person is ethically opposed to authors conducting promotional book tours, as well.

There are videos of my band playing online that have that little 5-star rating thing attached to them. If I think the video is good, I rate it high. If I think we suck in the video, I rate it low. I classify Spike's self-recommendation as the same type of behavior.

It doesn't feel unethical to me.

Maybe Spikes's proclamation of herself as being popular rubs you the wrong way. Maybe you just need to let go of the little things that don't amount to a hill of beans and focus on the important things in life.
