What's New Mean Eyed Cat? Whoa-oh-oh oh.
You may have gotten an email requesting that you PLEASE HELP SAVE THE MEAN EYED CAT! Alack and alas, you may have thought, another Austin institution is falling prey to evil condo developers! Those bastards!
Not quite. The Mean Eyed Cat was spared in the development of 5th Street Commons (which did not spare Austin Furniture Consignment or Pok-E-Jo's, although Pok-E-Jo's may get space in the new development). However, as a result of the development, the Mean Eyed Cat is trying to get re-zoned in order to continue to serve alcohol. The owner has been working with the city to make this happen, but could use your help. Click here or go to staymean.com, and fill in the e-petition to show your support for the re-zoning. Even better, go there tonight and sign in person at the Rare Magazine Launch Party:

The Mean Eyed Cat
1621 W 5th St
I give my woman half my money at the general store. I said, "now buy a little groceries, and don't spend no more," but she gave ten dollars for a ten cent hat and bought some store bought cat food for a mean eyed cat.

What? What is the new definition of Austin Institution? That bar opened around 3 years ago. The building's an institution, but the bar? Next you'll be calling for us to save Vicci or something...
Obviously, you've never been there. Or you haven't noticed how quickly bars and clubs in this town turn over. I don't care if it's been there 3 years or 3 months -- the place is wonderful and the atmosphere can't be beat. Besides that, it's Austin's best kept live music secret.
Now now, institutions are subjective. I'd say while the MEC has the feel and the frito pie to constitute "Austin Institution" the people that go there (yuppie kids too old to go to 6th street but too young to go to Lala's) and the lack of seating despite the obvious space make it un-Austin-Institution.
That and it hasn't been with us long enough.
