Snapshots: Wal-Mart Coming All Over The Place

walmartcoming.jpg

Many of our vigilant readers emailed to inform us that new Wal-Marts are planned for various locations around Austin, including the lot shown above on Second Street and the former location of the Binswanger Glass Building on South Lamar and Toomey (presumably as the ground floor component of 300 South Lamar). Clearly, this is a response to the community's gleeful embrace of Wal-Mart's plans at NorthCross.

An April Fool's prank? Guerrilla marketing by Wal-Mart's foes? We think not. More like the next step in the world's greatest corporation's never ending quest to roll back prices.

wow.

ick.

I am still trying to figure out where on Second Street this is. It looks like it's on block 21, right behind City Hall. Yikes!

Kudos to the pranksters.

Ahh, the april fools. Nice prank!!

Totally a prank. It's held on with gaffer's tape.

it is right behind city hall, across the street from Taverna. I hope it's an April Fool's.

I am praying that it is a prank. There is a sign on Barton Springs Road, too. Those evil people...are evil.

That is some of the best headline writing I've seen in a long time! And I know what I'm talking about because 15 years ago I won a 7th grade UIL Headline Writing competition.

The same folks complaining about the gentrification of Austin neighborhoods would complain if a Wal-Mart were located in one of those neighborhoods. You just can't please some people.

very clever. right? it's clever? so i can laugh and not be concerned?

I freaked out on Monday when I saw that the banner was still up on South Lamar. I've been all a twitter and trying to ruffle other people's feathers about this. HOWEVER, last night, I noticed that the banner was down. YAY! The neighborhood would have been IRRATE!!!!

Goddamnit. I wish this was for real. That would make me piss myself with joy. I love it when large groups of self-rightous people get angry.

"Wal-Mart coming all over the place"?
Wow, Shilli.
Someone wrap that hog before they get a damaged eye.
