17-year-old Hannah Hawley (photo at right) has been missing since Monday afternoon and has a heart condition requiring medication. She was last seen at South 1st and W. Stassney Lane. Police ask anyone with knowledge of her whereabouts to call 911. Texans for Public Justice says that our city is losing money on incentive deals. Citizens of Northeast Travis County are opposed to the possible expansion of the landfill in their area. The odor...

Construction worker fell over 25 feet (and may have landed on some upended rebar) from condo construction at 17th and Lavaca this morning. New background check requirements lead some volunteer dogwalkers to quit their work at Town Lake Animal Shelter. Al Gore is in town tonight; we'll keep an eye out for the YCT protesters. Numerous people named in Dallas corruption investigation, including city officials and a State Rep. A&M is having difficulties attracting...

Residents of Colony Park, just east of Austin off of U.S. 183, are fighting what looks to be a losing battle against what they see as a dangerous development in their neighborhood: a series of gas-filled, explosive tanks that are planned for installation across the street from a middle school. The proponent of what is being referred to as a "tank farm," if the developmental plan goes through, is one Houston-based Sun Coast Resources Inc.,...

It turns out that certain kids do, in fact, have cooties. At least that's the case right now in Round Rock, where at least thirty children have contracted a severely contagious disease called shigellosis. Caused by the bacteria shigella, which is picked up through fecal/oral transmission (ie, not washing your hands), the illness manifests itself with such symptoms as bloody diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, fatigue, and nausea. The outbreak thus far has been limited to Forest Creek Elementary (22 students) and Ridgeview Middle School (2), and authorities promise that they're doing their best to contain it.

As you make those New Year's resolutions, you may wonder how to get more involved in the Austin community for 2007. January is National Mentoring Month, and one way to mentor here in Austin is through a volunteer teaching position at Citizen Schools. The Boston-based nonprofit arrived in Austin last year, and helps children in lower-income middle schools to prepare for the rigors of high school and college. They've already won 2006 and 2007 Fast...

DMJM Harris, the consultant hired by the Texas Department of Transportation to look at ways to squeeze more lanes onto MoPac between Lake Austin and Parmer, says that they will likely announce their solution in December. That "solution" appears to be to squeeze another lane in between the existing lane and the train tracks. That lane would not be for normal traffic - only buses and people willing to pay tolls. A lane for...

Park Crest Middle School in Pflugerville had to be evacuated today because two students brought gunpowder to school. Apparently they had two sandwich bags worth of gunpowder, as well as a firecracker/firework fuse. The police haven't figured out yet why the boys brought it to school; the kids assert they had no plan to hurt anyone. Classes resumed less than an hour ago.

It's official. Last night the school board voted to turn Porter Middle School into a single-gender academy. It isn't effective immediately, but starting next year, the sixth graders of the area will be sent to other middle schools. The seventh and eighth graders are to follow later, with the district planning the all-girls school to start in 2007. We imagine teachers and administrators are probably at a loss to their future role with the school. On paper, this concept sounds like a good one (except for the whole closing of the current school thing). Will A. I. S. D. be able to handle an all-girls school and all that it will entail? We'll see . . .

Last night, Pat Forgione announced his vision for 2010 to the school trustees. Included in this plan are two possible concept schools: a Young Women's Leadership Academy (grades 6-12) and a High School for Global Studies, both to be housed at the current Porter Middle School Campus. It would be nice to see more description of these two proposed schools. How will a single-gender school and a multi-gender high school benefit from being at the same campus? What do Global Studies encompass exactly? Will these schools be comparable to current magnet programs, or would they be different?
