José González In Our Nature (Mute) Last year, González talked to us about the never-ending tour schedule, the slow process of songwriting, and how his next record --well, this record-- would focus on the guitar. His first full-length, Veneer, wooed us back in 2003, and though Gonzalez has been touring fairly relentlessly in support of it, he has found time to put together this work, a ten song album that sounds quite similar to...
With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked...
We haven't seen much come up in the '04 lately, but there are 04 new '04 listings this week:
Here are a few real estate listings that have come on the market in the past week:
New York City indie rockers The Walkmen made it big with 2004's Bows and Arrows, an aggressive, exuberant, and borderline-theatrical production that ended up on tons of year-end "best of" lists. Over the past two years, the guys have gone through some big changes: the Harlem building housing their personal recording studio, dubbed Marcata (where B&A was born), was bought out by Columbia University, in the school's ever-accelerating expansion north of Morningside Heights. After...
On the menu today: Sizzling underwater action! Hot Art School brats! Delicious football soccer stars! Scrumptious teen empires! Delectable California Jews! Tasty foreign brides! Bon appetit! Poseidon We’ve said it before, and now we’re saying it again: Josh Lucas is the new Kevin Costner. Careful, Josh. Remember what happened after Kevin’s big “water” movie? Yeah. Nothing good. *Art School Confidential We didn’t go to Art School. We imagine it’s just like the stories say:...
Starting this Friday, Austinist has yet another perfect excuse for getting out of the city for a day and enjoying the nearby hill country: Clifford's Original Wine Bar is opening its doors. [Visit Clifford's Website] Built in a clearing on the rolling hills of Wimberley, just minutes from Wimberley Square (roughly 40 minutes from Travis Heights), Clifford's Original stocks a fabulous selection of wines both domestic and international, with a well-represented assortment of reds and...
We went on the Travis Heights Art Walk today, and were pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see. Unique, handmade goods, including sculptures, ceramics, handcrafted furniture, woodwork, quilt wall hangings, eclectic clothing, intricately-patterned pillows, photography, and even more.

We imagine you have been walking around downtown recently and seen a small parade of helmeted tourist-types bumping around on Segways. Like us, you probably thought, “Is there a nerd convention in town? Did someone win the lottery and buy their family members Segways? Is Austin the techno-trendiest town in America?” Well, the answer is far less mysterious. Gliding Revolution Tours now offers 3 ½ hour daily tours of some of the highlights of downtown Austin. For $55 a person, you will get a brief instruction course and then you and your lazy techno-curious friends are off to glide around town, checking out such sites as Town Lake, historic Sixth Street, the architectural gems of the Capitol and more. You can also set-up personalized tours; so if you have friends visiting and you really want to give them a good up-close glimpse of the SoCo area and Travis Heights, just shoot the folks over at Gliding Revolution an email and they’ll be happy to hammer out the details with you. Of course, you could also just take one of the free Dillos around town and then use your two feet to walk the areas of the city about which you are curious. But then you wouldn’t have people pointing and staring and you, speculating, “Wow, I bet they know Bill Gates or something!”
Reader Lauren writes:
For a couple of months, we've noticed that when police or fire trucks pass nearby, there is a cacophonous response from Blunn Creek preserve in Travis Heights. It seems that there is an urban coyote population in Austin, and it's not just in North Austin.
Flightpath on Duval and 51st Street is our neighborhood coffeeshop. We couldn't think of a better place to start talking with local Austinites about all things Austin.
