We are very excited about the prospect of riding a fairly flat route from our house to the Triangle for New Belgium Brewery's Bike in Cinema. Tonight's feature is The Goonies, which has several of its own cycling scenes—most notably the one where Josh Brolin bikejacks Data's little sister and then, when forced to ride alongside the cheesedick driving a convertible Chrysler LeBaron, burns off the training wheels and is pitched over a cliff— is such a great film for them to hitch their wagon to, as it starts off with kids setting out on an adventure on, what else, their bikes.

On Saturday, July 4th, the Austin Yellow Bike Project (YBP) held a free concert and released seven hand-painted, sunshine-yellow bikes at Wooldridge Square Park. People decorated the bikes with streamers, hand-made flags and pithy statements like: “Have Fun or Die.” The refurbished bicycles - “Free to Ride, but Not to Keep” - will serve as sharable public transportation. Pete Dahlberg, who drives a pedicab, organized the bike giveaway. The concert by The Invincible Czars closed with the 1812 Overture (minus the cannon sounds) and attracted a crowd of around a hundred. Grant brought his brown duck, Puddles, who rides around in a cage strapped to the back of his bike. “They make great pets,” he said. “You throw her up in the air and she flies right back.” That is how yellow bikes are supposed to work: once freed, they should stick around.

Every Wednesday through June 10 at the Republic Square Park, there's a concert powered entirely by solar resources. Green rock'n'roll has never sounded better, and these weekly concerts a a double-edged sword of good karma -- every event benefits Blue Dog Rescue. Mellow Johnny's bike shop is providing free 'bike valet' services, so Austinites are able to ride gree, listen green, and give to a good cause, helping animals in local shelters find new homes. Acting on a search warrant earlier this week, APD conducted a search of Clayton's house and storage unit, uncovering roughly $60k worth of bikes and parts. Clayton had allegedly been running a "chop shop" from home for some time, stealing bikes from his friends and selling the parts on the internet. It is believed to have been his primary source of income.

The Downtown Austin Alliance (DAA) is looking for Austin-area artists to design sculptures that can double as bicycle racks.

As the growth of downtown continues to explode, so does the need for commuter friendly alternatives - enter the bike. Granted nothing new, but with Lance Armstrong's recent unveiling of plans for a commuter biker shop, he really is bringing biking back. According to Armstrong: "This city is exploding downtown. Are all these people in high rises going to drive everywhere? We have to promote (bike) commuting."
