Crush-Out Austin: Drew, The Cute Pedicab Driver

drew_crop.jpgIt's the handsome downtown gallery owner with curly hair or the hot Astanga instructor at Yoga Yoga South. It's the girl in the cutoffs at El Chilito or your favorite Lone Star Rollergirl.

It's your local secret crush.

Just in time to scope him out while you're hopping among downtown venues for SXSW, Austinist brings you this edition's interview: Drew, The Cute Pedicab Driver With the Slightest Southern Accent. Drew continues the streak of awesome interviewees for this column, and reminds us why the townies make Austin a great place to live, even when your favorite bar is overrun by A&R douchebags in skinny pants.

Next up: Will we track down the mysterious gallery owner at Urban Roots for not one but several married ladies? Or will it be the TX Rollergirls' Punky Bruiser? Intrigue! Art! Rollerderby!

Have you recovered from the overly-commercial singleton drudgery that is Valentine's Day? Shoot Hallmark the finger, and shoot us an email, and maybe we can help you get back on the gallant steed they call "Romance." Giddy up, vaqueros.

So, Drew, what do you do when you aren't working as a pedicab driver?

I’m in graduate school and I substitute teach at a high school in town. I also took up yoga recently.

What was the last book or periodical you read?

Today, I read some of the New York Times and Dwell Magazine. Also, I’m reading an Andrew Jackson biography and Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War.

Drew recalls a hilarious frat daddy slugfest, calf fetishists and gives a shout out to UC Santa Cruz's Banana Slugs--all in the extended interview.

Here we go - it's the required annoying record question. Share with us three all-time favorites and one recent, noteworthy find.

I don’t think I can really answer an all-time favorites question when it comes to music. Maybe Bob Dylan and Robert Johnson would be on that list. I did became recently aware that I often listen to something heavy like Three 6 Mafia or 8Ball & MJG (or maybe some Houston rap) and then put on something mellow like a Belle & Sebastian or Elliott Smith album. [I] wouldn’t work as a DJ.

Something fairly obscure that I’ve recently been into is Dubstep, which has been coming out of London for the last few years (my favorites are Digital Mystikz, Skream, and Loefah).

Describe the last thing you saw that really made you think.

Hmm… that movie, City of God, was on TV the other night.

Do you have any siblings?

I have a younger brother in Dallas.

Where is your hometown(s)?

I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan but grew up in Dallas.

Where did you live before Austin?

Charlottesville, Virginia.

Favorite eatery in town?

Mi Victoria Bakery (cheap donuts/sweets and breakfast tacos) and Nuevo Leon. But this is almost as hard to answer as the all-time favorite songs question.

What is your favorite mascot and why?

UC Santa Cruz’s mascot - the Banana Slugs. In high school I briefly thought about going to college there and since that time I haven’t seen or heard of a better mascot than theirs.

Agreed. Banana Slugs is right up there with the Orangemen on "huh?" meter. What is a guilty pleasure of yours?

Sneaker shopping and buying random stuff at estate sales.

Any funny pedicab stories to share?

So much crazy stuff happens downtown late night, but I’ll tell you one recent event that happened in my cab. Two really drunk guys (who had managed to tell me that they were best friends growing up and now one was in town visiting the other) started to get into a fist fight/ wrestling match in the back of my cab. As I slowed down to kick them out of my cab, one guy
threw the other clear out of the cab. The guy still in the cab got out and as he ran towards his ‘friend’ he slipped and fell flat on his face. Bloody face and all, I told him to get back in my cab, drove away, dropped him off a few blocks around the corner, and told him to calm down before he went looking for his friend again.

He started apologizing to me and said this happens all the time when the two of them get together. Luckily, I still managed to get a decent tip from the guy.

That's hilarious. Do you ever have to get rough with unruly drunkards?

Usually dealing with drunk dudes is more funny than it is annoying (and some nights it can be pretty depressing). You just try to stay clear of the belligerents and not allow them into your cab. Really it’s the drunk women who will violate pedicab drivers. First they might say something like ‘nice calves’, then all the sudden they are grabbing your legs or butt. But usually, you’ll get a big tip out of it because the woman who’s the least drunk will feel embarrassed for the way her wild, drunk friend acted.

We've been guilt tipping for years. I guess it all comes around tho'. So, what else would you like us to know?

I’m happily married and I think the TV show Deadwood is pretty cool.

Thanks, Drew.
