Austinist Interviews SXSW: Rob Crow
Rob Crow: frontman for indie tech-pop darlings Pinback, member of innumerable side projects (Heavy Vegetable, Goblin Cock, Team Sleep, Optiganally Yours...), perennial solo artist, vegan...the guy must have a secret portal to the 32-hour day. How else he does as much as he does, and as well, is anyone's guess. Due at SXSW to promote his latest solo record, Living Well (a contender for best album cover of 2007), Rob graciously answered questions about the biz, tacos, and hating rock and roll.
Is it still fun to play live if the audience is 95% industry?
Well, I've learned that some of my favorite people in the world could be labeled as "industry." There is a way of doing artistic "business" and still being surrounded by cool people.
What's your favorite song on the new record? Why?
"Bam Bam," because its the hardest to play.
Is there an album an ex ruined for you that you'll never be able to reclaim?
If you mean ex-record label, then there's about 8 of 'em.
Name one record that has influenced you (musically or otherwise) the most.
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica.
Tacos or burritos? Margaritas or beer?
Pokez vegan chimichanga with a margarita pitcher.
Is there such a thing as rock n roll anymore?
I wish there wasn't. I'm sick to puke of self-important morons in leather jackets and sunglasses being idolized.
Is SXSW fun or business?
It completely depends on the schedule
If you could open for any artist living or dead, in any era of their career, who would it be?
Fugazi.
Who are you most excited to see play at SXSW?
Hella.
Pitchfork: Do you even read it?
I barely have time to even read my comics.
What do you never want to see inside a tortilla?
Meat.
