Austinist Music Preview: New Release Tuesday

Here's what's new this week:
The Walkmen Pussy Cats Starring the Walkmen (Record Collection)
When John Lennon and Yoko Ono took a break in 1974, the former jumped into the studio with pals Ringo Star, Keith Moon and Harry Nilsson (among others) to produce Pussy Cats, a fascinating mix of classic tunes and originals arranged primarily by Nilsson and Lennon. Misunderstood and bizarre, Pussy Cats is the ultimate buddy album for music geeks with a taste for psychedelia and mass instrumentation. No wonder, then, that The Walkmen decided to recreate it this year after finishing A Hundred Miles Off. Fueled by friendship (with help from Quentin Stoltzfus of Mazarin, Alessandra Maria of Tomorrow's Friend, and ex-Make Up man Ian Svenonius), Lennon's Spector-ish production (the production is far more dense and lush than other Walkmen recordings) and over 40 background vocalists, Pussy Cats is no doubt the cheeky, drunken and wistful indie rocker's album of the fall. To be enjoyed with National Bohemian and a seedless bowl.

The Blow Paper Television (K)
The Blow have been working on perfecting the art of the pop tune for years, and if you like K's brand of light, sometimes jangly recipes, you'll no doubt be a fan of Paper Television. At once a collection of dance beats, sentimental melody and doo-wop catchiness all pervade this album, for better or worse. "Imagine a see-thru space station, floating in the dark, culling out via radio the most delicious flavors of planet Earth's pop music production ... " Well alright, alright! P.S.: They're on tour with Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins, and were in town last night, did you get a peek?

Pulp Complete Peel Sessions [Import] (Universal/Island))
Just in time to wet our lips before Jarvis Cocker's impending solo album, this collection of 25 year-old Peel Sessions commemorates the brilliance of Pulp's catalog, despite an unfortunate and untimely end that was only the beginning of their rise to semi-fame. Paving the way for Interpol and Hot Chip, reinventing the term "cheeky", and making disco unbearably sexy are only brief waypoints on the path of Pulp, and though we doubt that this album will change anyone's mind who hasn't already found themselves enamoured, it's a welcome addition to any record collection, fan or not.
