Keep Austin Normal: This Week on Stage

guysndollsheader.jpg

Outside of it being the second-to-last week of Frontera Fest(!), things have taken a turn for the traditional here in the A-burg. Now’s your chance to get out and see theatre that actually looks and sounds like real life – instead of some weird, alternate reality where people scream a lot and pee on stage. (Note to reader: if you’re like us, and enjoy weird peeing plays -- never fear -- next weekend brings some Neil LaBute and new work from the dirigo group! More on that later.)

FRONTERA FEST: Short Fringe is all that’s left of this performance marathon. Best of the Week on Saturday is bound to be worth a gander, but because we’re sometimes unsure of what the judges’ criteria for selecting Best of the Week could possibly be, we’d recommend checking out the always popular Haiku Death Match II: 3D (featuring our favorite from last week’s Best of, Big Poppa E) and Natalie George’s Jesus Stole My Classic Rock Station on Thursday. On Friday, check out Steve Barney’s Puppet Government, which made a little cameo on KXAN last night. (Full disclosure: we're in this production, so if it sucks, don't tell us) For tickets call 479-PLAY, and for the full schedule, go here.

PS on Frontera: we hear it’s sold out, but if you show up at 7pm, the good people at Hyde Park Theatre will put your procrastinating backside on the waiting list.

Check out everything else after the jump.

NEW THIS WEEK:

DANCING AT LUGHNASA: Brian Friel’s story of five middle-aged and unmarried sisters in 1930s rural Ireland. Tired of whiz-bang theatrical gadgets and non-linear storylines? Yearn for the good old days? This is your show. Feb 3 -24, Sam Bass Community Theatre. Tickets at (512)244-0440 or by email.

GUYS AND DOLLS: Remember when you tried out for this play in high school to impress Betty LaPerfect, only to discover that she had some sensitive, college guy boyfriend named Dirk? Relive the magic out at the Georgetown Palace. Feb 3 – March 5, Tickets by calling 512/869-SHOW.

STILL TRUCKIN’ FROM LAST WEEK:

HOUSE AND GARDEN: This über-play by Alan Ayckbourne received a nice synopsis from the Chronicle, and according to this dude at the Statesman, it’s worth your nickel. Don and Laura Toner both direct this auspicious undertaking at the Austin Playhouse. Tickets at 476-0084.

GET YOUR WAR ON: Yes, the rumors really are true, this show has been held over for an additional weekend. We loved it, the Statesman loved it, and the Chronicle loved it. It kicks ass. Jan 19 – Feb 11, The Off Center, Tickets at 476-RUDE or hiding somewhere in here.

STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE: Remember that other show you tried out for in high school to impress Johnny LaDarkandbrooding? Now you can relive that magic as the Way Off Broadway Community Players bring us, once again, this celebrated drama by Tennessee Williams. Fridays and Saturdays, Jan 20 - Feb 4. There will be one Thursday performance on February 2nd. Tickets, info, etc at 512-336-8966, or here.

TWO INTO WAR: GIFTS OF WAR and THE RETREATING WORLD: This American premiere from Different Stages is full of down-home, "moving" anti-war commentary, and got a rave review from the Chronicle. Jan 20 - Feb 11 at the play! Theatre Tickets at 474-8497 or via Austix.

DARK GODDESS 2006: Still weird and still nude (probably, we haven't seen this one yet). Highly successful ritual theatre from the Vortex, running Jan 21-Feb 25. Tickets and the like at 478-LAVA or at their groovy new website. Vortex kindly reminds you that there will be a special Dark Goddess Ball featurning dozens of goddesses from prior productions at the theater on Feb 11 from 8pm to 1 am.

URINETOWN: This Broadway smash hit has become a big honkin' success at the Zach Scott Theatre. Prepare to laugh till you pee (har har). Jan. 19 - Mar 12. Tickets at 476-0541 or via la intraweb.

SHEAR MADNESS: In the grand Zach Scott tradition of running popular shows until everyone in Texas has had a chance to see them, this "hillarious whodunnit" starring Martin Burke and directed by Dave Steakley continues this weekend...and next weekend...and...Tickets at 476-0541 or right...about...here.

TEN LITTLE INDIANS: This Agatha Christie mystery from Onstage Theatre Company stars local legends Lana Dieterich and Michael Stuart. Guaranteed red herrings galore! Jan. 28-Feb. 12. Sat.-Sun., 1pm at Austin Playhouse. Tickets at 445-9866 or at Onstage's website.

I resent your posting that the Vortex Theater Production of DARK GODDESS '06 has nudity. I am in the play and can assure you that there is no nudity. Cleavage...yes. Nudity, no. It is suggested that you actually SEE this or any show prior to making presumptions and passing them along to your readership or risk tarnishing your credibility with the public.

It's a good point, and I'm always thankful for the correction (even resentfull corrections), but I'd like to mention that...

Bonnie Cullum, artistic director of The Vortex, promoted Vampyress (the last Vortex show) to me as having "more pussy than ever before". The show before that, (hOle -- out in the yard) had boobs all over the place. Last year's "Artaud Project" saw larger-than-life vagina costumes parading around the stage. Flip through the "archive" photos on the Vortex website...what do you see? Boobs. Nudity.

So, tarnished as I may now be, it's not like I pulled the Vortex reputation out of my ass.

"Still weird and still nude (probably, we haven't seen this one yet)."

i think that exact quote explains it, quite clearly. but in case you are having trouble parsing my meaning, i will reiterate, "probably, we haven't seen this one yet."

Thanks for backing me up, homeslice.
