Another week, another steaming batch of new movie releases. What’ll it be, folks?
Big Momma’s House 2
Martin Lawrence, your pigeonhole is waiting for you.
*Nanny McPhee
The new Mary Poppins - only uglier, and with more children. Starring Emma Thompson and brooding hottie Colin Firth. Supposedly this movie is doing very well in the UK. We could make a joke about unattractive British people here, but we’re far too classy for that.
Annapolis
Aw, bless you, James Franco. You’re trying so, so hard to be an “actor.” It hurts when people like Heath Ledger rise above teen idol status, doesn’t it? Yeah. Don’t worry, we’ll always fondly remember you from Freaks and Geeks. Kisses!
Bubble
Steven Soderbergh’s (yeah, what?) completely depressing, minimalist look at boring ol’ life, with a murder thrown in to spice things up. A great date movie!
*The Matador
It’s good to see Pierce Brosnan embracing his inner smarm.
*TransAmerica
Felicity Huffman’s stunning portrayal of a male to female transsexual won her the Golden Globe for best actress. Teri Hatcher must secretly be just livid.
*Austinist recommends. We also recommend these first runs: Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Chronicles of Narnia, Fun with Dick and Jane, Good Night and Good Luck, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, King Kong, Match Point, Munich, Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic, The Squid and the Whale, Syriana, Walk the Line

Also, Spike and Mike's animation festival started last night at the Alamo Downtown.
