We're duly impressed by the responses we received for this week's Reader Reviews - keep 'em coming!
From Cole Wimpee:
Local Bluesman virtuoso, Scott H. (for 'Hiram') Biram, is briefly back in Austin after a supposed stint in Costa Rica and before the launching of a tour across the nation in September and seizing on the opportunity to see him in the interim, I checked out the midnight-monday-morning show at Beerland yesterday... Biram is one hell of a punk-rock, blue-grass, one-man-band uproar. In the past I've heard his sound equated to a fine slosh of death metal = gospel with a staple song praising the lord: "What's His Name? "Jesus" but sung through a rigged-up harp mike with beautifully-toned screams and screeches and strummed with a fury on guitar. He throws in curveballs to contrast the old-school ferocity of his set however and just when you think he's the most masochistic son-of-a-bitch god gave too much talent to to bastardize, Biram surprises you with a soft old delta blues accapella number which breaks your heart and shows this demon-edged man has gotta have a heart of warm jello in there somewhere. There are quite a few musicians in this town which are fine, but Biram tops my list for his capacity to show a wide range of skills (he even yodels wonderfully occasionally) and colors. It's a shame too, because many local music aficionados such as myself seem to draw blank faces when I mention his name. Biram's website shows a gig for this friday at Emo's, so if you've got no plans, make the plan and see this man before he goes back on the road. Let's hope he stays away from head-on collisions with 18-wheelers this time...
Miranda offers:
Friday was another jammin' night of dancing to funk and soul music with the Waxploitation boys and Obatallah on the mic. The place got packed and the evening was electric. I had only ever been to Waxploitation when they've played Continental Club - this time Red Scoot Inn played host for the evening and I think I enjoyed myself more: dancing under the full moon, getting all sweaty and flirtin' with the DJs. That and it was free!
Giorganna Mansfield had a good time:
at beerland for the interest kills on saturday night...great show with cari from belaire helping out on keys and backup vocals. saw tons of "trail of dead" equipment lying around and had to ask why. apparently, "the black" (the headlining band) is made up of members of "trail of dead." you learn something new every day!
From Chauncy Westhousen:
The DJ Q*bert exhibition on Saturday night at Sky was packed, hot and the drinks were CUURRAAZZZY ‘spensive. Like, we got charged $7.50 TWICE for vodka and tonic. Those are UES prices and shit! Sometimes, it was cheaper. $6 or something more reasonably Austin-ish (we drank a-lot, so we’re not totally clear on all that). If you are a fan of turntablism and Scratch Culture, his performance was exactly what you would expect. His skills are undeniable, but his sets, like his person, are kinda short. The highlight was when he scratched and cut using only one record. ONE record. Scratching AND cutting. If you give a shit about these things, it was FUCKING AMAZING. His “Rock the Bells” encore, while decent, was pretty weak up against that. And his crazy Filipino cousin “MC” shouting “I love America! Check this new sheeeet out man! Ah, yeah!” every twenty seconds was hilarious.

I was at the Exit/Chant show on Friday at Elysium. It was pretty cool, I especially liked when the Exit guy had them turn on the disco ball. But the best part about the show was when some girl was heckling the performance, and this dude totally bitched her out. I was hoping for a throw down, but they just yelled obscenities back and forth for a while. She stopped heckling though.
Elizabeth McShahazmabat had this to say:
We showed up fashionably late to the Nic Armstrong / Thieves and World Leader Pretend show at Stubb's on Friday, but they started right when the doors opened! Was bummed that we missed almost all of NAATT's set, but their last song was simply great - we stuck around to check out World Leader Pretend, but because of the booking problems there were just a little over a dozen people inside. Unfortunate, because they were brilliant - and that crazy wall of sound they ended the show on left us begging for more!
From Randy Goldstar:
We were at some house party on the Eastside ... way far on the Eastside past the airport ... and got to see the Shim Shams play in a small bedroom with almost no one else there. Talk about surreal! They play dance-rock like it's nobody's business. And I'm not sure, but I think I saw one of the guys from Fluffer's Union having a beer out back and chatting up the ladies. Good times!
Seriously, folks, brilliant. And we didn't even have to make up any entries!
Well, maybe one.
Send us your weekend reviews and we'll promise to post them in due time. Pictures and short movie clips you guys take are welcome as well - either include them in the emails or tell us where to steal find them! And your names don't have to be real (unlike, say, Ms. McShahazmabat) ... unless you want them to be. After all - on the world wide web, you're all rock stars, baby!

Aarrgh! We are clamoring for the recap for the real world episode 9 before episode 10 airs. We've become addicted to our weekly dose of snark and withdrawal symptoms aren't pretty! Where are you Ben Brown?
Whoa. Look at you. The masses all got together and posted. Yet, I wasn't aware of this. Am I out of the masses or something? I'm pretty sure someone failed to tell me this.
And why is "Masses" capitialized? Oh, I get it...you're not talking about masses as in bunch o' people...you're talking Masses as in the Masses Family. Like Andy Masses who lives down the block from me. And if that's the case, you still owe me $50 from our last Poker game, you sonuvabitch!
/had no reason to post anything
/brings nothing to the table
/you guys need to get your aliases right. Wasn't it McShazmabat originally? Where's Mark Hammer when you need him?
stepa way from the nirtous tank, miggo.
the mcshazmabat family wants a piece.
