Few forms of entertainment elicit such fanatical, diverse opinions on what warrants the label of being "good" as comedy does. To this day, the mere mention of Andy Kaufman's name can set off a heated debate on whether "genius" or "talentless asshat" is more applicable, and the perceived injustice that the Freaks and Geeks fan club was dealt when network suits and critics downed one of Judd Apatow's earliest efforts still has teeth.

All this well-researched, fancy pants wordsmithing to say: comedy is a highly subjective thing, yeah? What else can explain the rise and rise of Jeff Foxworthy, while Bill Hicks died in relative obscurity? In the Venn Diagram of humor, comedic tastes rarely overlap among a large group of people. Enter local duo Get Up.

Made up of Shana Merlin (Girls, Girls, Girls) and Shannon McCormick (Salvage Vanguard Theatre), Get Up never fails to entertain, regardless of the constitution of the crowd. Those that prefer their comedy broad and physical don't always pick up on the subtly placed, New York Times-inspired commentary that Get Up somehow spins into every show, but there is little doubt that everyone leaves a Get Up show with their funny bone rocked. Add to the equation that Get Up is improvising that stuff (and that even those comedians with the highest improv batting averages will occasionally whiff), and the exceptional nature of Get Up's talent becomes even more apparent. Through June 30th, they'll be performing with a new local duo each Saturday night as part of Salvage Vanguard Theater's Late Night Saturday series, currently titled Two Two: A pas de deux (de deux!) of comedy duos.

Spent the last of your scrit on that Sgt. Bilko DVD set on eBay? Shaving lines into your eyebrows for entertainment? Stop scraping the pipe and take a shot at seeing Get Up for free this weekend, boyee! (For the flush among us, just pony up and see the show.)
