Austinist Preview: Emo's 15th Anniversary Bash, Day One

Emo's is more than a venue. It's an institution. Here in Austin, it's the club with cojones, the one that will open its doors to damn near anybody that can haul an amp out of their van. From screaming teenage scuzz-punkers out of Des Moines to be-pastied burlesque beauties to big name national acts; on most any given evening, there is something compelling going on at Emo's. And, oh the memories!

We've been rocked dangerously hard by up-and-comers on the inside stage, sweated our keesters off to bob to Ratatat, frozen our fingers to catch Of Montreal, and left a few ill-advised pre-concert dinners in those infamous bathrooms. Tonight, they will begin paying homage to their noisy legacy by kicking off an eight day orgy of live music. It's practically a mini-SXSW, a Hanukkah, if you will, for devout rockers.

This evening - which would be Friday - on the inside stage we're lookin' at sets of nuanced shred from the likes of "ambient" hardcore-type guys Mouth of the Architect, the irreducible metal of 400 Blows, and, finally, a band whose songs seem to be the soundtrack to Queens of the Stone Age devouring Pavement: Unsane.

In the Lounge: the unabashedly listenable Aster, The Boxing Lesson's poppy angularity, and the completely f-ing rad Thee More Shallows. We will be at the very front of the crowd.

Outside, a cornucopia of insanity that culminates with local rock powerhouse The Riverboat Gamblers including Chix Pack, Acid Reflux (ex Limpwrist), The Arrivals (Patty of Dilinger 4), Summer of Blood, and The Freeze (out of Boston).
